The town of Lake Lure was incorporated in 1927. The lake itself is man-made and offers 21 miles of shoreline, and is as deep as 115 feet at some points. (Earlier information reported 27 miles of shoreline.)
One of the most important facts to know about Lake Lure is the dam, power company, and real estate of Lake Lure were acquired by the Town of Lake Lure in 1965. The town continues to sell electricity to Duke Energy, although profits from the dam come second to maintaining a fixed water level year round for the residents of the Lake Lure area. The lake is lowered once every three years from December to February to enable lakefront property owners to make needed repairs to docks and boathouses.
Located in the "thermal belt" of the Carolinas, Lake Lure usually experiences very mild summers and winters. Lake Lure is peaceful and quiet; and it's a great place in which to relax and unwind.
In addition to scenic views, Lake Lure offers plenty of outdoor recreation, everything from waterskiing and lake touring to fishing, golf and many scenic areas to hike. Lake Lure offers the best of two worlds - it has low elevation, but also has spectacular mountain views.
Chimney Rock State Park overlooks the Hickory Nut Gorge, which is the natural gorge that was formed by the Rocky Broad River as it meandered its way down to what is now Lake Lure. The river was named the Rocky Broad River for the boulders that seem to line its winding path down the mountain.
Aside from its scenic views and friendly residents, Lake Lure is perhaps best known for being the real-life location of the hit movie, "Dirty Dancing". Most of the interior and exterior scenes were filmed in Lake Lure. Some exterior scenes were filmed at Mountain Lake in Pembroke, Virginia. The 1987 low budget movie got the world on its feet and became a romantic classic.
Centrally located to Greenville, Asheville, and Charlotte, Lake Lure offers the perfect location for weekend and vacation getaways. Lake Lure has become a popular destination for corporate retreats, weddings, family reunions, retirement and full time residents.
